Jamberoo golf day marks 150th Anniversary of Kiama Council

NOT all the shots were of historic magnitude when 100 people took part in a special event at Jamberoo Golf Course on Friday September 25 to help mark the 150th Anniversary of Kiama Council, but at least the intention was there.

Experienced golfers, Jamberoo Golf Club members, teams from a variety of Illawarra businesses and organisations, and a few first timers, teed off at the picturesque country course at 8.30 am in a four person Las Vegas Ambrose event.

There might have been a few air swings from some of the business teams but at the other end of the scale a string of birdies were needed to make it anywhere near the winners podium.

At a post game luncheon and presentation at nearby Jamberoo Pub, Kiama Mayor Sandra McCarthy said it was heartening that some 40 community organisations had approached the council wanting to stage events to mark the 150th anniversary.

Many, like Jamberoo Golf Club, had done this by organising special sporting events.

Jamberoo Club President Phil Lewis said one of the reasons the club had wanted to stage the event was to acknowledge the support given to the club by Kiama Council over many years.

Lewis also praised the effort but in by the tournament organiser and Jamberoo Club Captain Lance Fredericks.

The event was won by the crack team of Michael Madden, Ivan Kennedy, Clive Bunn and Rick Murphy, who finished with a very creditable nett score of 51 4/8ths.

Supporters and sponsors of the event included Kiama Council, Fredericks IGA Jamberoo, Gloria Jeans Coffees Kiama, Mitchells Removals and Storage Kiama, Chachis Restaurant Kiama, Pinocchios Pizza Albion Park, Jamberoo Action Park, Kiama Photo House, Kings Patisserie & Café Jamberoo, Elders Real Estate Jamberoo, Westpac Bank Kiama, Golf Mart Warrawong, Kiama Central Tyrepower and Cronin & Norris Accountants.

Jamberoo Ladies get in before the "Red Dawn" to raise $4058 for Camp Quality

ONE HUNRED golfers braved blustery conditions to take part in the Jamberoo Golf Club Ladies 15th Annual Camp Quality Charity Golf Day on Tuesday September 22.

It was the day before the “Red Dawn” and the dust was starting to assemble around the escarpment but this didn’t dampen the spirits of all those involved in this very worthwhile and fun event.

The popular American Foursomes format went off like clockwork and the day is a tribute to the organisation and work put in by the Ladies Committee and all the other volunteers involved.

Thanks should go to many sponsors and individuals who donated trophies and prizes, worked the sausage sizzle or provided the many plates of yummy cakes and slices consumed for afternoon tea.

The highlight of the day, as usual, was the handing over of a cheque for $4058 presented to Camp Quality representative Ann Tanks.

In the golf results, first in the Men’s Division were Phil Lewis and Brian O’Hare, who are still working out what they will do with the winning prize of accommodation and dinner at Jamberoo Pub and Saleyard Motel.

Runners-up were Ken Bradley and Jim Henry, with B Cotterill (Nowra) and Robert Anderson third, and Graham Kuskey and Eddie Cram fourth. Fifth Neville Hutchins and Laurie Fogarty, sixth Rod Hodkinson and Bruce Hammond, seventh Lindsay Wiseman and Lance Fredericks.

In the Ladies Division, Shirley Walsh was once again on the winners podium, this time accompanied by Belinda Wall from Gerringong.

In second place was Marilyn Wright and Helen Robinson (Port Kembla); third was Chris Miller and Jeanette Simpson, fourth Robyn Gregson and Carol Wiseman, fifth Viv Boxell and Veronica Hayter and sixth Sue Pearl and Isabelle Dorocinski.

Jordan's 65 equals course record

THE club's 14 year old whizz Jordan Widdicombe has equalled the course record playing in the first round of the Jamberoo Golf Club Junior Championships.

Jordan’s sizzling two under par 65 was the best championship score by anyone at the Jamberoo course since the record was set in April 2007.

The record was set and is still held by multiple club champion Adrian Gehrmann.

Jordan's score was posted last Saturday (September 5) during a round that was also played as the club’s Golf Mart Monthly Medal and was the third round of the Men’s Championship.

In the A Grade Monthly Medal, Jordan’s nett score of 57 beat his nearest adult rival by six strokes.
(What a shame. Tony Rodriguez was feeling so confident on 63 nett.)

The course record is required to be posted when the course is set in championship mode and played off the back tees.

Jordan has only been playing golf for a little over two years but his dedication to the sport has been obvious and the diminutive Jamberoo teenager is often seen practicing before and after school and at weekends.

“I am just so happy,” Jordan said after sinking his putt on the 18th hole to equal the record.

His round included six birdies, a lot of straight hitting and some quite exemplary putting.

“Even I can’t believe this,” he exclaimed after holing a long downhill sliding putt for birdie on the sloping 13th green.

Lining up on the 18th tee, Jordan was three under and knew he just needed to par the hole to take the record.

A somewhat wayward tee shot and an unlucky bounce saw his ball in a hazard and balanced unplayable on the lip of Hyam’s Creek.

Jordan, who has taken part in junior golf development programs, managed to keep his composure and coolly salvaged a bogey.

Troy Monie Wins Jamberoo Men's Open

SHOALHAVEN Heads golfer Troy Monie has taken out the 2009 Murray Tractors Jamberoo Men’s Open with a spirited performance against a quality field at the Jamberoo Golf Club on Sunday.

Monie fired a one over par 68 on a beautifully presented Jamberoo course that has often made it tough for even the best to break even or better.

Monie, playing off a four handicap, beat a field of 79 golfers representing 10 Illawarra and Sydney clubs.

He was three strokes clear of gross runner up Neil Bartley from the Port Kembla club who claimed second on a countback.

Jamberoo golfer Jarrod Gehrmann showed his local knowledge to take the Nett Winner trophy with a 63 off his eight handicap.

There was thankfully no rain during the tournament but overcast conditions and little run on the course made things interesting for some of the region’s young guns as well as seasoned senior pennants players.

The Jamberoo Men’s Open has become a much anticipated event on the Illawarra golfing calendar and as well as the Gross Winner there are a number of prizes awarded over three grades.

Other Results:
A Grade Nett Les Skarratts (Jamberoo) 65 c/b, A Grade Nett Runner Up John McGrath (Shellharbour Links) 65, B Grade Gross Dave Ransom (Jamberoo) 79 B Grade Nett Paul Hemmings (Jamberoo) 64 B Grade Nett Runner Up Carlos Colaruso (Jamberoo) 66 c/b, C Grade Gross Scott Ryman (Jamberoo) 89 C Grade Nett Sal Oggero (The Grange) 68 C Grade Nett Runner Up Phil Hellmund (Jamberoo).
